...is more than plenty, with these Blackbirds. Wanted to share a few pics of our two local colorful Blackbird species. First up is the male Red-Winged Blackbird ( Agelaius phoeniceus ), with its distinctive red patch on each wing. A couple curious males, checking things out. Next up is the Yellow-Headed Blackbird ( Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus ), the larger and more aggressive birds of these two species. These Blackbirds will dominate a large marsh, pushing the Red-Winged Blackbirds off to the outer fringes. The males are territorial and can be seen, like bright yellow beacons, sitting atop the bullrushes, surveying their staked out spaces. Steve, how are your Blackbirds behaving and how effective has the bird-proofing of your pots been working so far? dvg

Cute birds Doug. No real decimation of Sphagnum seedlings in the last week, so I dare to say that the frenzy is over for this year, I have too many pots to protect fully, so anything precious has to be in the greenhouse till about this time of year, but as space is limited all others take their chance outside.

Surely it'd be a pleasure to have your seedlings decimated by such colourful blackbirds,

It's good to hear that you've gotten a reprieve from the Blackbirds and their annoying antics there Steve.
Between them and the wrens uprooting seedlings in search of the appropriate layers of sphagnum, it's enough to drive a man to drink.
Cheers! 🍻
Doug

One of the neighbours has acquired a new feline that visits, maybe its presence will send them off elsewhere. I have yesterday made a new trough of Darlingtonia seedlings, planted in pure Sphagnum, outside. Time will tell..............
