A couple of Helophilus hoverflies turned up and I was allowed to take photos this time. Possibly Helophilus pendulus, a view of the face stripe would have been a help.

Saw some small flies hovering around a hanging flowerpot yesterday, so picked up the phone to attempt some pics. It turned out the tiny hovering flies were very camera shy, leaving us both circling the hanging pot, with them on one side and me on the other. I felt like the monkey chasing the weasel around the proverbial mulberry bush, leaving me with a newfound respect for Fred's ability to camera capture these flighty creatures. Finally a larger type of hoverfly happened along, landed on a yellow flower, and actually allowed the phone close enough for a few pics. dvg

I was hoping the Helophilus would return today so I could get a positive ID using the facial stripe. Well, that didn't happen. I did take a few shots of Hoverflies and got some decent results so you'll just have to suffer those . A little difference in size

I believe this is the first time I've photographed this species.

Any ID on that newest one Fred?
Was told by a lady with experience in such matters that the hoverfly that i posted pics of here is Syritta pipiens or the Thick-legged Hoverfly, a male she thinks.

A teeny tiny wee yen. I believe it's Syritta pipiens a common, widespread hoverfly. Fred, you weren't exaggerating when you noted it is common and widespread. dvg
