I popped along the road to the flowering ivy hoping to be able to record the Ivy Bee, Colletes hederae. We pass the plant regularly and thought that it was possible that amongst the hundreds of wasps ( Median and Common) and flies this newcomer to the UK (2001) may be present. (credit: FLPA / Alamy) Unfortunately this photo isn't mine as I didn't see any on this occasion. What I did see however were a great number of wasps and flies and of course where the insects are there's a few spiders. I have plenty photos of wasps so I concentrated (mainly)on the flies.

As I said, where there's insects there's spiders. Surprisingly the only prey I saw them with were wasps. This isn't a full sized Araneus and she was busy with one she'd mummified. This big girl was finishing a meal off and couldn't be bothered to deal with a wasp that was hanging in her web.
