MrsG and I spotted our first Blackbird fledgling round about last Wednesday 3rd May. We weren't exactly sure at the time because we thought it was a bit on the early side and the bird had a well developed tail. However, another two appeared this morning. It looks like the mild winter had them breeding very early. This dry weather spell ( drought) will help the smaller birds raise their young too. It could be a very good year for tits.

We believe that every Starling in the country has now fledged and by the sound of it they're all in the garden

Blondie was back yesterday. A bit on the thirsty side. Really long zoom on these

Crows and Jackdaws are accepted by the throng but as soon as a Magpie appears the warnings are sounded. Seeing one dive onto and grab a fledgling by the neck was a surprise. It's well know that they predate the nests and take hatchlings but it was unexpected to see this attempt to take a fledged bird. However, an attempt it was, the youngster was strong enough to escape, this time.

I certainly haven't seen any of those around here, but we have no shortage of European starlings. One of those widespread introduced species.

The first Starling fledgling spotted being fed this morning. I believe this is the earliest we've had one ( so far)
