Prepared the parent plant for winter today, only 33 fronds this year but the length was about the same as last year. The second flurry of fronds was later this year, climatic difference (I hope). Cheers Steve

I got a new dicksonia at the start of the year and it's performing much better than its moody mate, mine's just started unfurling another frond but it was a late starter

The parent plant was prepared for winter today, in the usual manner, it grew 44 fronds this year at an average of 45”. I will fertilise the surrounding soil next spring. One thing I did notice is that non of the sori were ripe, they generally don’t get fully ripe on mine in the U.K., but inspection of the early produced fronds with semi ripe sori and bringing a few fronds into the house usually ripens them enough to get spores a plenty, but these are just too immature I have moved the 1-2 year old seedlings into the porch for winter protection, there are now 28 survivors some being lost to the cold snap that came earlier in the year. Those that remain are robust and have 9” ish fronds which I will obviously leave on. They are a pleasure to grow. Cheers Steve

This is fairly typical of what the Dicksonia seedlings look like no after 28 months . They have come on quite well.i think considering I have given the far from ideal conditions. I’ve managed to loose some more through neglect and I am now down to 28 individuals. Cheers Steve

Will you be able to manage with only 28 tree ferns Steve?

I uncovered the main plant on March 15th, ( I generally do it around this time) when the weather was somewhat better than we have had of late. It has stood without protection since then and as you can see is showing no signs of frost burn or damage. The fronds were tight packed last weekend so have grown 4” or so. It has obviously decided that spring is indeed here.

Looking ready for business, no sign of growth on mine but it still has a few old green fronds from last year ,must admit I probably didn't protect it as well as you did Steve

After the cold and wet May the Dicksonia has finally took know and created the shuttlecock, characteristic of the new growth. The fronds are about 30” at the moment. Cheers Steve
