Was in a local hardware store last weekend and found some kale seeds on a seed rack there. My wife loves kale, so we've tried a few kale varieties over the years. This year I picked up some kale seeds of the lacinato and dwarf green curled varieties. The lacinato is different from other kales, in that it is sweeter in taste, and has tender leaves for eating raw in a salad. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacinato_kaleWas curious if any of you grow this superfood, and if so what varieties do you prefer to grow? dvg

Hi Steve, how is your garden growing for you this year? You get a good head start on your gardening season, while over here, the frost isn't out of the ground until June. With all of the rain we've had lately, our garden is pretty wet, but was still able to take a few pics of the kale that i seeded this year. Here is the lacinato or dinosaur kale, my personal favorite. And here is the dwarf green curled kale on the left, with lacinato on the right. Here is my largest variety, the Siberian kale, up the middle row. And a row of lacinato (left center row) with the Siberian just to its right. Steve, hopefully the cabbage moths haven't been creating havoc with your kale this year... we've had to cover it with reemay cloth one year, just to protect it for harvest... ...oh, and my better half doesn't like little green worms crawling through the kale leaves...gets her kinda excited actually. Cheers, Doug dvg

In the UK? Is Doug tempting you? Suttons have the answer Here Now those are some kale varieties I have not yet seen, nor heard of before - very cool. I had forgotten that you can overwinter these there. The latest I have had them alive in our garden here is November 6, when they finally froze solid. They can take a good frost and overnight temps down to -6°c or below that even, as long as the next day temps go up above freezing again. Kale and swiss chard are by far the hardiest cold weather garden plants that we grow each year. When do you plant your kale plants outdoors then....later in the season? dvg

Hi Doug, mine are doing ok thanks, but not as weed free and in such regimented fashion as yours I’m afraid. I am also jealous that you can get away without a net, If I leave mine uncovered these days the pigeons rip them to shreds in no time, eating the residue of what the cabbage white catapillars leave behind.
Cheers Steve
