Very prominent veining on those pitcher hoods.
Fred, have you noticed any debris in Herc's pitchers yet?

You could stuff a few of those Rolls into any Herc's belly, easy enough.

What has Herc been getting up to this spring, Fred?
Hope he has been keeping well.

I had to delay the response to get a decent reply Doug. Herc is putting up his new pitchers and flowers. He's looking as robust as ever. The characteristic back view of the hood. And we have a single flower open so far.

Herc is gonna be ravenous after emerging from his winter's hibernation. Maybe a few food pellets dropped into Herc's first few pitchers will help with those spring hunger pains. www.carnivorousplants.org/grow/feed/sarraceniasoil#:~:text=Sarracenia%20are%20able%20to%20absorb,you%20can%20fertilize%20juvenile%20plants. Although juvenile seed grown Sarracenia can utilize higher concentrations of fertilizer, Herc himself might very well benefit from his new pitchers receiving a few squirts of ferts. dvg

Nearly 40 years ago I was adding dilute fertiliser to juvenile pitchers using hypos. If the pitchers weren't that accessible I was injecting it through the lids. We're talking drops here. The plants utilised the fertiliser and it helped them increase growth rate. That regime didn't last too long, it's just not necessary and I'm not in that much of a hurry. Herc as I have explained in the past has such wide pitchers a Jumbo Jet could escape from them, so Herc really hasn't had a square meal for many many years. It doesn't stop him putting up flowers and pitchers annually so we'll just let him continue as is. I may throw in a Lily Beetle or two given the opportunity but that's all. You must ask about the fun I had procuring the Hypos some time. I still have quite a stash. BTW I use Hypos minus the needle for watering the mesembs. I know exactly how much each plant gets.

Syringes and Sarrs sounds like an anabolic steroids story, for sure. Just have to wonder what a behemoth Herc would become if he became a juice monkey. You must ask about the fun I had procuring the Hypos some time. I still have quite a stash. Okay, since there is no time like the present, i'll bite...assuming you weren't selling your own blood... I pick up my syringes and metal needle attachments at a veterinary supply. Found that the 4" long horse needles come in handy for some specialty projects. dvg

Now remember I'm using very small amounts in seedling Sarracenia pitchers so I started with small insulin syringes. I wanted to increase the size so I went to a local chemists and asked the price. They insisted that they couldn't sell me syringes and needles but they could give me some. I'd already told them what I wanted to use them for. Anyway I had to stand in the shop and was given a lecture on aids and the dangers of sharing needles. I then left with several years supply of free 5ml syringes and needles. Several years later the same thing. I told them why I needed the syringes, they gave me a lecture on aids and sharing needles and I left. The difference this time was that I left with prepared 5 ml syringe and needle kits . I still have some of those. I've also procured syringes of 20, 30 and 50ml which I use for watering the mesembs. Those I had to pay for though To this day I have never shared a needle with my plants so some would declare that the lectures worked.

Some of the Herc flowers. I was trying to think of a collective noun and came up with a horde of Hercs or a body of Hercs.
