I was looking for something to go into shade in part of the fernery when I saw bulbils of Begonia grandis advertised. They are regarded as 'hardy' particularly ssp. evansiana so I placed my order of tiny bulbils for this and ssp. sinensis 'Red Undies'.I decided just to tray them up and leave them in the cellar (dark) until the weather improves or they begin to shoot. We'll see how they progress over the next season.

Nothing to report on the above bulbils. My third batch, Begonia grandis Alba, has been looking barren and dry so I thought I'd just empty the tray on the garden and the bulbils could take their chances. Today was the day of action and I picked the tray up and this little fellow greeted me. He'll now be pampered until he's ready to go out on his own.

The quest for hardy Begonia continues. Purchased in September is Begonia emeiensis. Supplied as a large rhizome ( for little money) so it's in a large pot. We'll see how it goes. Begonia "Torsa" I bought early this year as three pips. Somehow I've managed to get three plants. They're in 3 x 3" pots and looking good.
