Hi Steve & DVG etc. My user name may give it away but I am really a Cactus fan, well anything that grows really so I have been looking at Carnivious plants too! Reading a bit and looking at how to keep them.
So I am wondering if anyone has a few small plants or seedlings that they might be will to part with! I could afford to pay something and at least cover packing and postage cost. Starting from no where really so just about anything will do?
I have Cacti & Succs seedlings that I can swap, if your interested.
Best wishes.
Mel.

Hello Mel and welcome to the forum! Just curious what part of the world that you're currently residing in as we have forum members in the US and Canada, with a few that are spread across Europe, while most live in the UK. Also what plants are you interested in growing and what are your favorite succulents to grow? Cheers, Doug dvg

Hi Doug, Thanks for the reply, I suppose I should go and introduce myself really. I've been a Cactus & Succulent fan for over 20 years, mostly growing small stuff like Rebutia, Lobivia, Mamms. as I only having a small Greenhouse. but lots of flowers some very tiny others big and showy!! Now I want to try something different and so I've been reading up on Carnivious plants and want to give them a try. It seems that most don't need any feeding or you kill them, most seem to grow in spagnum moss perhaps with Perlite, sand or grit? A little help here would be useful. It seems some keep them outdoors all year? Pitcher plants, Sundews and the good old Venus fly trap would perhaps be a simple start. And things called Pings? (Someone is sending me a couple of Hybrids) Best wishes. Mel.

Hi Mel
Yes you are right in your summation, generally Sarracenia, Dionaea, and temperate Drosera and Pinguicula, can all be grown outside, all year, in the UK, in acidic nutrient free substrates. The popular mix being 50% Sphagnum moss peat with 50% silica sand, grit or perlite or in pure Sphagnum or 50/50 mix. Many other mixes exist but those are relatively fool proof mixes. Non like any form of nutrients, which can burn the plant or roots, and cause death, although some people do fertilise plants with very weak liquid fertiliser, but this is best ignored until you have some experience. If you are getting some hybrid pinguicula, see if you can get more detail on them as they could be tropical plants which will need different growing conditions. If you get the basics right, i.e. sunlight, water and substrate they are easy to grow and very rewarding.
Cheers Steve

The book "The Savage Garden" by Peter D'Amato was literally my entry point as an adult into this rewarding CP hobby. I ordered the book, and read it and was overwhelmed as much as being totally amazed with the diversity of CPs available to grow, as well as their care and soil media requirements and recipes, respectively. And then i bought two vfts... Cheers, Doug dvg

Oh good to hear that you found a copy. To post photos here, you're best off to use a third party hosting site. I use the free imgbb.com hosting service. Looking forward to seeing some pics of your plants. dvg
