Been meaning to start a thread to show the beauty and diversity of fungi, I was reminded of this when I found this handsome specimen  a small dog for scale  I hope others will add to this thread ,getting to that time of year when the fungi start to appear so I'll be adding more strange and colourful pics ,I'm not too bothered for names but may look a few up on the way |

Was wondering if Buddy was in training to be a truffle dog?
How is that dog doing now Corky - has he calmed down more now that he's older?

Yeah he's calmed down a bit now ,but not much and as for a truffle dog  that'd be a right result , I'd get another and retire |

Corky, that red mushroom with white spotting ( Amanita muscaria ) along with the brown mushroom cap with similar white spotting ( Amanita pantherina ), are both "fairytale" hallucinogenic psychedelic mushrooms. That pic of Buddy with his head in the crotch of that tree trunk is priceless! It's a good thing that he has broad shoulders and a tether on him, otherwise he mighta fallen in and gathered all the truffles up.  dvg |

The hole in the tree is his favourite place to grab a quick slurp of manky water , there's plenty of deer around in that wood and I'm sure it's an oasis for them too during the summer dry times. Think there are safer mushrooms to eat, I hear some reindeer herders feed them to their deer and drink the urine as the deer can handle the toxic part , how do people work these things out in the first place

shaggy ink cap or lawyers wig Is my guess on this one ,apparently very tasty in a stake and kidney pie ,don't think I'm confident enough in my shroom Id to eat a plate full  this is a pic from earlier in the thread  and the same fungi tonight  who'd of thunk it |
