Looking really good ,I've tried but failed twice now with this species, is this kept in a porch or greenhouse ?

Hi Corky
It’s kept n the porch over winter (I can’t afford a stained glass greenhouse yet), and as it’s attached to the house it’s just that bit warmer than the greenhouse, which being unheated gets frozen on occasion, whereas the porch doesn’t. Cheers Steve

I finally got ahold of this species after looking for it for the past 6 years or so. It's amazingly difficult to find for a species that's notoriously prolific.

Don't give up too soon, I've had some tubers of other species skip a year ,maybe a light sprinkle of water wouldn't harm, when do they normally show growth?

Hi Corky
I normally water them in early September and they start showing a couple of later, but not so this year, I will keep them in the porch and hope they break dormancy, and given your advice, keep them over another year if they don't show. These are supposed to be easy keepers, which they were at first, but as I have replicated the same conditions that previously worked, I am a bit perturbed.
Cheers Steve

Turns out I am a master horticulturist!!!! They have burst through in the last day or so and are heading north at a rate of knots. I am pleased, I do like these delicate plants and I would have been very disappointed if I’d done for them. pretty poor picture but you get the idea. Cheers Steve

I never had any doubts I've still deaded these twice , have they multiplied as it looks like three in the first pic and four now?

An update from me: I started with 2 tubers which turned into 12 or so last season. No flowers yet but this particular form reproduces like mad and gave the species its reputation (I understand there are forms that don't reproduce this quickly though.) I just received 2 more tubers with location data today and will have to see how they behave.

Corey’s posts have reminded me to drag my modesta out of its summer resting place and get into growth. It is very dry but I have just inundated it, so hopefully I haven’t killed it and all the ingredients to get it into growth are there,

I think your d.modesta looks about the right colour, from what I can find out they are mostly green with just that small amount of red on the business end so don't go chopping that lime tree down
