I've taken the plunge and bought the electric fence. It's branded as B&Q but I've seen exactly the same product under other brands. I paid out a whole £9.99 & free postage for a starter pack ( 10m run) and 2 extension packs (20m each). In total the package weighed in excess of 4kg so included postage is a real bonus. Priced separately at the old retail prices the 3 packs would have totalled £69.85 (plus postage). Electric Slug Fence
There are plenty still available. The starter pack works on a couple of D batteries which are housed in a clever little unit which in bright sunny weather switches off as the slugs and snails will be inactive and has a flashing indicator light. There are a couple of crocodile clips to connect to the metal strips and the slugs and snails complete the circuit These electric fences are well proven as effective barriers. My current thinking (see what I did there? ) is that the extensions can be cut up into the required lengths to surround groups or individual plants/pots and each connected up to a 9v battery.(I already ordered 10X 9V battery connectors for 99p/10 postage included) The batteries will be housed in a weatherproof box (take-away container or tupperware type) and again with wired crocodile clips to connect them to the metal strips. I don't think a clever little unit with light sensors and flashing indicators is really needed just a periodical check that the circuit is still operational. Those not used to using an ammeter can just stick their tongue across the metal strips (Ouch)

This project is on hold as the individual electric barrier on larger tubs using self adhesive copper tape is under evaluation. See that thread here Prototype Electric Tub

The first small fence is now in operation. It will eventually hold 4 super toms of Drosophyllum. At present it is guarding the 4 small Drosophyllum plants.
Its construction nudged me into ordering some Aluminium tape (with conductive adhesive) which is far cheaper than copper tape.
