I thought I'd open a thread on how my plants progressed (or not) over the winter. A pot of three plants, these were first plants to germinate plus an imported individual, that explains the size. These are in a 14" pot with electric slug barrier. This is fairly low down in the aisle of the top lean-to greenhouse so I've simply taped on a sheet of aluminium foil behind it to reflect some light. For the next couple of months it will not receive any direct sun. The next are two 12" pots with three plants in each. The difference in size of the plants is due to when they germinated. These are on the outer (lighter) bench. Again these will receive no direct sunlight over the next couple of months, their situation is lighter than the above though. The minimum temperature so far on all the above is 1.8C on Monday night 28/29.11.16

Outside in an open growtent I have 4 x 10" pots. These have been subjected to subzero temperatures already. Monday night I couldn't record but I set up a max/min thermometer and recorded a temperature of 0C on Tuesday night 29/30.11.16. As this was a warmer night than Monday, as evidenced by the record inside the greenhouses, this gives the subzero figure to Monday. These are placed higher than all the previous pots but still unlikely for them to receive any direct sun for a couple of months. I've just taken shots of two of these.

Having said above that the plants don't get any direct sun for a couple of months, things may have changed a little. It certainly got quite a bit lighter today. Trim Sir? That was a big tree to the south west. We're not sure where the Crows will nest now or the Jackdaws hold their Parliaments

A note for size on the above photo. The 'stumps' where the tree has been cut down to at the bottom of the photo are still the same height as the house roof. He still has another 20ft to cut off to get down to them

Yep, that should make a difference to light levels!
I'm watching your Droso growth reports with interest, as I've sown some seeds for the first time recently (probably a stupid time of year to do so!)

12th Decenber and a quick update. All the plants are doing well, even the little totty seedlings that weren't re-potted have mucilage. The 14" pot The two 12" pots

Two of the 10" pots The inflorescence is doing well, it's looking like I may get a late January flowering.

What I did find interesting was this view of the inflorescence below the buds. A nice arrangement of glands, even on the bracts.

Apart from the one demise all the rest of the plants look very healthy. The inflorescence on the largest plant has continued its growth even in the coldest periods. I like getting in close to see the various glands all over it. The latest photo I've taken to three views. The top with the buds The stem, lower section The middle section Something tells me it'll not be bothered by Aphids

A loss so far of two plants which were both outside in the growtent. The one with the toadstool and the one directly in front of it. I said above that I'll not be bothered by Aphids on the inflorescence. This is quite true but one of the other plants has suffered. I've given the crown a good spray with Provado ( no bees around at this time of year so it's perfectly safe) so it should recover well. The inflorescence is progressing and one of the buds has broken to show the yellow petals. It shouldn't be too long to get an open flower in the current mild temperatures.

The aphid affected plant is recovering nicely after its dose of Provado. The new growth is showing as normal. The first flower bud for me for 30 years has opened . I'm still not sure why I had such a long break from this plant.

I've replaced the two casualties from the outside grow tent with small spares. We'll see how these little fellows go.
