In all my years of growing carnivorous plants I have never grown Dionaea from seed before, I have never had the need or requirement really. However last year for the first time I gathered some seed off a typical clone and planted it at Xmas in a cold porch. The resulting seedlings are pleasing and have surprised me with how some have coloured up in a location where they only get 4-5 hours of sunlight and that is not direct, this early in the season. Cheers Steve

Having read the perceived wisdom years ago that fly traps aren’t really worth growing from seed because it takes too long for them to grow and mature it’s something I’ve never bothered doing since I started this hobby many years ago. I have various typicals growing outside from purchases undertaken at a whim when out shopping. Last year for no real reason, I harvested some seed and having found them in my seed box sowed them with no real enthusiasm. Having seen the seedlings I can see even at this early stage the diversity that is being shown and am beginning to regret not having done it sooner....,.

Oh how I dislike the term 'typical' What is a typical plant? It's a plant someone hasn't got around to giving a name Keep up the good work Steve and give all your plants names, even if is is George, Ralph. Sid or Rodney. Then you'll not have any 'typicals'

Having read the perceived wisdom years ago that fly traps aren’t really worth growing from seed because it takes too long for them to grow and mature Used to think the same thing Steve, until i grew them from seed a few years back. Turns out they can be grown out from seed to flowering size in much less than a year, with some help. They can be forced quickly from seed by growing them 24/7 under lights. Mine were fed very regularly, first with a smaller sized springtail and later, when the vft traps were larger, with a larger springtail, both grown in cultivation here. Then later when the traps were bigger again, they were fed a smaller species of flightless fruit flies ( D. melanogaster).
Finally, the traps were fed a larger sized species of flightless fruit flies ( D. hydei). The seedling vfts grew very quickly in these conditions, and were getting crowded in their 4" pots in just a few months time. If they are transplanted before they become too crowded, then their growth will continue quickly along, unimpeded. If you're interested, here is a link to some pics of my vft seedling's growth progression with the aforementioned conditions: ocps.proboards.com/thread/5285/vft-germination-questiondvg

Thanks Doug Unfortunately, I have no means of forcing them under lights, but have moved them into the greenhouse which is well populated with springtails and hope that the increased light and heat will work their charms. Cheers Steve

They'll grow fine for you Steve.
Enjoy them and keep us updated with their progress.

A second tray of many hundreds of seedlings that I won’t have enough space to accommodate next year. I can see I will need a clear out and a new system to accommodate my newly acquired desire to grow these plants.

Wow! The rate of growth you guys are getting is phenomenal. I'm definitely starving my few little guys. Have to ramp up the feeding program.

I know I might get ridiculed but is boiling Sphagnum peat in rainwater an idea to prevent carpet moss growing and swamping tiny VFT seedlings ?
