I have had for a number of years a hanging basket of various forms of binata hanging in the porch in pure Sphagnum, which doesn’t get optimum light conditions but the plants do reasonably well and look well in setting sun. cheers Steve

This is a binata multifida red, which has just started growing outdoors, but has started feeding already. Whilst it isn’t very red yet, it on a nice show last year, I think I will make a hanging basket of it come the spring. Cheers Steve

A hanging basket sounds like a great idea Steve.
Looking forward to seeing how that works out.

This is a two leaf binata originally from Marston Exotics, the label unfortunately long gone, but it is very robust, never seems to have much dew but is very effective at catching small prey. This one is in a hanging basket, but it’s erect habit sort of negates the basket idea. It runs rampant through the bogs reproducing regularly from the roots and it sets viable seed too from interaction with the multi leaf forms also in the bogs. It seems to have been snacking on lacewings recently. Cheers Steve

This is the Marstons Exotics, two forked clone which in the absence of any ID I have nicknamed the Green Manalishi for fairly purile reasons. The basket is full and the surface is just a mass of black roots, all trying to produce further off shoots. I have started another basket last year with D. Marstons dragon, but it hasn't had enough growth time to fill the basket with roots as yet, so looks a bit sparse, but it will pick up once the roots get going. A ladybird nymph flirts with disaster. Marstons Dragon Cheers Steve

Some of the binatas in the outside bogs (I really need to dig a lot of them out they are taking over, but when I have done this in the past any portion of root left starts the cycle again!) took my eye this morning with few on the dew. Cheers Steve

Well over the closed season I bought this binata “ghost” I did think at the time .. Why!! I have tons of the blinking stuff coming up all over the place, crowding out bogs and pots alike. Most of it propagated by me pulling the crown out but leaving the root’s intact or at least pieces of them. Anyway I bought it, and I like the white, if it continues in this whiteish vein it could be a handsome plant. Cheers Steve

binata 'Ghost' is an expensive plant! How much did you pay for yours?

Hi Dudleya I can't remember where I got it for sure, nor the price, but it was probably Farmyard Nurseries or West Cornwall Carnivores, but I don't think it was expensive, expensive if you know what I mean. I won't pay silly prices for plants on principle and I'm pretty sure that anything over a tenner for a binata would have stuck in my mind. I'll see what information I have kept if any. If it does what every other binata I have has done for me, you are welcome to some root next year.
Cheers Steve

Just stumbled across some paperwork. It was £6.00 from West Cornwall Carnivors.

The binary ghost is growing but as I suspected, less than vigorously, despite being in the greenhouse, due to the lack of chlorophyll in the plant. Unusual plant but I’m not sure I like it. Apologies for the quality of the picture I couldn’t get the phone to focus on it. Perhaps that’s why they call it ghost!!! Cheers Steve
