This old geezer needs re-potting. It's needed re-potting for a couple of years but I can't seem to find a steel gauntlet on ebay. It's the most vicious cactus I know. It looks quite cute and hairy but if you go within 3ft you're regarded as fair game. A closer look at those spines tells the story. It had me trapped and I was just taking the photo. MrsG had to get the tweezers for me.

It's a very pretty specimen from a distance, but those fish hook tipped spines look like they both bite and catch.. ... the catch-and-release part might get a bit dicey without the protection of your chain-mail gauntlet gloves. Good luck with its repot. dvg

Mission accomplished. 2 x 3ft rods either side of the pot with MrsG on the other end. Lifted the plant up, knocked off the pot and straight into a prepared 7" square with the compost moulded around an identical pot to the original. I think it still doesn't realise it's been moved.

Beauty and the beast. It appears to have appreciated the repot.

That's a gorgeous little beauty. Nice capture of the hooked spines; its demand for respect is best heeded, lest a nasty incident result. dvg
