The web appeared this morning and the spider is sitting in the centre this afternoon. As yet unidentified.

Comb footed spider? A view from the other side giving colouration of its abdomen might help ID.

That's the problem Stu, to get that shot I'd have to climb onto the Sarracenia lagoons, walk around and stand on the section of S. purpurea without catching the web.

I managed to get a view of her upper abdomen and she looks remarkably like a sub-adult Steatoda nobilis. Now to see if she darkens as she matures. I'll make a mental note not to handle this one

Could be, although their webs are usually fine and run horizontally (flat) between things and the spider tends to hide away rather than sit in the middle.
We've got loads of false widows in the South East... quite a few in my greenhouse at the moment, think they were the first to move in after I glazed it!

You had me out in the greenhouse in daylight with a torch Stu. She was hiding under the lid of a Sarracenia so a bit dark when you're looking up. I'm changing my ID to Metellina segmentata (unless anyone knows differently)
I found another UK Spider ID site and I think that one will stick.

Haha, you had daylight today? We had (much needed) rain and gloomy grey skies.
I think you've nailed the ID now. Actually it looks to be the same as a large one that's taken up residence in the wife's greenhouse at the moment.

We had a lot of cloud, thunder and lightning. It rained and I collected a massive 10 litres . I think I'd get more if I followed the cat with a bowl.

I finally managed to get a side view of her. She's changed colour a little bit.
