My brother gifted me a pack of mixed lithops seed at the start of 2015 , planted up start of February . They were easy enough to get going and are looking worthy of a pic three years later. I know they can be grown quicker as my brother grew some far larger in a much shorter time , I'm still happy enough with them . I'm sure to serious lithops geeks these are a bunch of worthless hybrids but I think they show some interesting colours and patterns

they are almost ready for the first good watering as the old leaves have almost shrivelled up on all plants,

I have resisted the temptation to water these, they did get a few little sprinklings over the colder darker months

the first pot has a couple of double headed plants this year, i will give the first proper water in the next few weeks, no rush with these

My seeds from silverhill seeds have started to germinate ,planted on the May 27 so a week ago, I have two species, l.karasmontana and l.otzeniana,both show germination

both look the same at this stage so just the one pic,l.karasmontana is in the pic

Yep ,clear plastic over the tops of the pots to keep the humidity high. The pots were placed in a northerly window,I forgot I wasn't supposed to cover the seeds and put a thin layer of silica sand on top, luckily it hasn't seemed to matter, maybe because it's almost transparent

Thanks Corky, i have decided to give these a go because of yours and Fred's threads showcasing this genus.

I have some older Lithops seed varieties to sort through now.

Thanks to you, and Fred's helpful resources, my choices should be easier to narrow down.

Corky, your mix looks quite sandy on top, while Fred's appears to be coarser and more open.

Do you have a coarser mix under the finer sand on top?

Underneath the pure silica sand is a mix of sand /peat/perlite/and cat litter which seems quite popular because it's cheap,it's the fired clay type. My thoughts were the fine layer of sand on top would help stop anything else growing like moss and looks good for pics😁, so a shorter answer is yes coarser below
