My latest mesemb acquisition, Delosperma echinatum. A shrubby perennial that is frost hardy and reputedly more so if the roots are kept dry over winter. The plan is to sit this outside over the hotter months but we all know about well laid plans Those hairs covering the leaves are quite soft, it just looks vicious. Flowers are yellow.

The flower fully open. I do like this plant, it shows a bit of individuality

Delosperma bosseranum germination a week after sowing. Not bad considering the temperature was around 17C, dull and wet and the tray placed under a bench. I've now opened the vents on the propagator top (unheated) Due to the thin sowing, the seedlings are nicely spaced so will not require pricking out for quite a while. It's good when a plan comes together

Fred, do the Delosperma echinitum flowers have any scent at all to them?

I didn't expect a scent as they're day flowering Doug. I've checked and there is none.

That's a good point Fred.
Do you know if the day flowering succulents rely on ultraviolet signature patterns on the flowers to attract insect pollinators and the night flowering species rely on floral scents or phermones to attract their pollinators?

That's my take on it Doug. No doubt there will be some that don't follow the rules though

Delosperma sutherlandii in one of its short open flower periods. It only opens for a couple of hours in the early afternoon. (So far)

The Delosperma bosseranum seedlings are progressing nicely, even when I'm absent.
